Howard
Hughes Medical Institute Program
The
Department of Biological Sciences at Hunter College, with funding from a Howard
Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Undergraduate Science Education Grant, welcomes
you to the new age of biological studies. The HHMI grant provides Hunter with a
wonderful opportunity to expand its Biology Department Curriculum and create
research opportunities for all biology majors.
Student Research
and Broadening Access to Science:
The current grant provides
the following opportunities for biology majors
1. Integrating the MARC and HHMI programs by extending
research opportunities/career mentoring to all women and economically
disadvantaged students. Applications are
available in the HHMI Office, Rm. 927F.
2. Summer research opportunities at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, MA and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory continued. Applications available in the HHMI Office, Rm. 927F.

Curriculum, Equipment, and Laboratory Development:
1. Curricula being developed for interdisciplinary
specializations in Biophysics and Bioinformatics.
2. Quantitative biology lab modules for core biology
courses, and curricula for biology majors interested in high school/middle
school science education have been developed.
New, Current, and
Future Faculty Development:
Junior faculty will have the opportunity to invite an expert in their field to give a seminar and spend a day in their lab discussing ongoing and future research.
Precollege and
Other Outreach:
1. Summer workshops for high school/middle school teachers followed by visits by their students to Hunter College and the American Museum of Natural History during the academic year. Applications for summer workshop available at the HHMI Office or by sending requests for applications to the HHMI Administrator listed below.
